Sonia Boyce
Sonia Boyce
This A3 digital portrait printed onto high spec white paper is a likeness of female artist Sonia Boyce. A series of fabric portraits were made by the artist during the lockdown years. Elaine wanted to create a pantheon of female artists she admired and put herself in the middle of this work as a way of honouring herself as a woman artist of age. In an industry that can be extremely exclusive and has not included women for too long, Foster-Gandey saw this collection of work as a way to nod to her peers and to give visibility to herself.
This portrait was included in the Royal Academy Summer show 2021 and sold to a private collector on day one. A fabric version of this portrait featured in a recent exhibition in Cornwall called ‘Threads of inspiration: Fabric portraits of female artists’.
