Contemporary Textiles workshop series, 5 sessions Thurs 2-4pm (10th April - 8th May)
A five-week series exploring contemporary textile techniques inspired by leading textile artists. We will experiment with fabric manipulation, hand-stitching, printmaking, and mixed media to create expressive textile artworks.
Five sessions every Thursday 2-4pm, starting 10th April - 8th May
Week 1: Textured Textile Collage
Inspiration: Cas Holmes’ layered textile works.
Process:
Gather fabric scraps, lace, paper, and found materials.
Learn fabric bonding techniques using Bondaweb and fabric glue.
Layer and stitch different textures together to create a dynamic composition.
Introduce simple hand-stitching to add details and texture.
Week 2: Hand-Stitched Landscape Embroidery
Inspiration: Richard McVetis’ detailed stitchwork.
Process:
Sketch a simple landscape design and transfer it onto fabric.
Learn basic embroidery stitches (running stitch, French knots, seed stitch).
Build up texture through layering threads and exploring different stitch densities.
Experiment with using negative space and different colored threads to create depth.
Week 3: Print & Stitch on Fabric
Inspiration: Alice Kettle’s use of storytelling in textiles.
Process:
Create a simple block print or stencil based on a landscape theme.
Print onto fabric using textile inks and explore layering prints.
Once dry, add hand-stitching or machine embroidery to enhance details.
Experiment with embellishments such as beading or appliqué.
Week 4: Experimental Fabric Manipulation
Inspiration: Claire Benn’s abstract and textural textile work.
Process:
Explore heat manipulation techniques (using heat guns or soldering tools).
Try fabric distressing methods such as burning, cutting, or fraying.
Work on building up a tactile surface using layering, gathering, and pleating.
Add mixed media elements such as paint or metallic foils.
Week 5: Mixed Media Textile Art
Inspiration: Contemporary textile artists (students choose inspiration).
Process:
Plan and develop a final textile piece, combining techniques from previous weeks.
Experiment with composition, texture, and embellishment to create a unique piece.
Receive one-on-one feedback and guidance to refine ideas.
Group discussion and reflection on personal approaches to textile art.
